Silver Boomerang SILVER BOOMERANG
You must do test 1 to 7; you may choose any three (3)
of the remaining tests (8 to 14)
1. Health - First Aid
i.) Personal Health:
  1. Explain how to keep your feet in good condition and why.
  2. Discuss why sleep is important.
  3. Discuss the importance of a balanced diet.
  4. Prepare a healthy lunch for an outing.
ii.) Basic First Aid:
  1. Check and replenish or put together a simple first aid kit and take it on bushwalks and outings with you.
  2. Show how to treat a bleeding nose.
  3. Show how to treat stings and insect bites common to your region.
iii.) Infections: Show an understanding of how germs and head lice can pass to people by contact and how to prevent this.
iv.) Adult Help:
  1. Explain why you need adult help in case of accidents.
  2. Pass a message including an address from one adult to another.
  3. Explain how to use a mobile phone and a public phone and discuss the steps you would take to make an emergency call.

2. Safety
i.) Buddy System: Define the buddy system and explain its benefits.
ii.) Home: Discuss the causes of accidents around the home and garden including in sheds and around swimming pools.
iii.) Road: Discuss the safety aspects of travelling in cars, buses and trains.
iv.) Water:
  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the dangers of swimming in swimming pools, rivers and lakes, the sea and by dams.
  2. Identify safe areas for swimming.
v.) Bush:
  1. Explain what to do to make sure you don't get lost in the bush and what to do if something goes wrong..
  2. Demonstrate three ways of making distress signals.
vi.) Fire:
  1. Discuss the ways that fire can start in the home and the bush..
  2. Show what to do if you are in a fire at home.
vii.) Personal: Discuss what to do if you do not feel safe somewhere.
3. Ropes
i.) Tying Knots:
  1. Tie a sheetbend.
  2. Tie a clove hitch.
  3. Tie a reef knot.
ii.) Use of Knots: Discuss how and when to use these knots.
iii.) Care of Ropes: Name the parts of a rope.
4. Outdoor Scouting
i.) Compass and Navigation:
  1. Understand how many degrees there on a compass
  2. Know eight of the cardinal points
  3. Use a compass to follow a trail that includes at least six compass points
ii.) Maps and Hiking::
  1. Use a road map to work out the distances between two towns named by a Leader.
  2. Demonstrate five trail signs
iii.) Fire Lighting: Discuss the ways a fire can start in the bush and at home
iv.) On a fire you prepare and light, cook a meal such a sausages or food in a foil pouch
5. Cub Scout Traditions
i.) The Jungle Book:
  1. Tell one of the stories in the Jungle book that does not have Mowgli in it
  2. Explain the signifigance of Baloo and Bagheera in Mowgli's life
ii.) Scouting History:
  1. Find out when Scouting started in your local Group
  2. Find out and explain the meaning of your scarf and your District badge
6. Symbols of Australia
i.) Flags: Describe the flag of your State ot Territory and show an understanding of its components.
ii.) Emblems: Describe the emblem of your State or Territory and show an understanding of what it means.
iii.) Flora and Fauna: Name and describe your State or Territory flora and fauna emblems.
7. Promise & Law
i.) Duty to Your God: Find out three things about your beliefs and explain them to your Leader.
ii.)Promise and Law: Talk to your leader about how you have tried to put your Promise and law into practice in everything you have done.
iii.) Service: Do a good turn for your Cub Pack or Scout Group and tell your Leader about it.
8. Fitness
i.) Ball Skills:
  1. Throw a ball 10 metres to someone else and catch it on return five times.
  2. Hit a ball with either a bat or rtacquet five times.
ii.) Athletic Skills. Perform a standing broad jump as far as possible.
iii.) Strength and Stamina. Skip 20 times forward and 10 times backwards.
9. People and Cultures
i.) Indigenous Australians: Explain some of the customs, traditions and crafts of the traditional owners of your area.
ii.) International Cultures: Learn to say "Hello", "Goodbye", "Please" and "Thank You" in a language other than your own (preferably by a native speaker of that language).
iii.) Scouting:
  1. Take part in a Pack Council.
  2. Take part in an activity with another Pack or one organised by District, Region or Branch.
10. Scientific Discovery
Do two (2) of the following:
 
i.) Biology:
  1. Observe how an animal, bird, reptile or insect develops and behaves.
  2. Report your findings.
ii.) Chemistry: Perform an experiment that shows the difference between gas, liquid and solid states.
iii.) Geology:
  1. Explain how volcanoes erupt and earthquakes occur.
  2. Show an experiment that illustrates one of these.
iv.) Physics:
  1. Show you understand the weather forecast.
  2. Show how rain is formed.
v.) Estimation:
  1. Estimate the distance from your Scout Hall door to the nearest road, from one end of the Hall to the other and the height of a flagpole or tree.
  2. Check how accurately you have estimated these against known, accurate measurements.
11. Natural Environment
i.) Recycling:
  1. Explain how you can recycle household waste.
  2. Make a system for recycling organic waste from your home such as a worm farm or a compost heap.
ii.) Pollution:
  1. Help to clean up litter in your local area.
  2. Discuss some of the effects of pollution on our rivers, lakes and seas.
  3. Show how you and your family can help reduce water pollution.
iii.) Habitat Destruction. On a bushwalk find examples of five things that have damaged the environment.
  1. Litter?
  2. Pollution?
  3. Salinity?
  4. Erosion?
  5. Man-made damage?
12. Self Expression
Do two (2) of the following:
 
i.) Performing Arts: Organise and perform in a mime, skit or play with other members of your Pack.
ii.) Visual Arts: Create a painting, drawing or 3-D piece and display it.
iii.) Creative Writing: Write a poem or short story that may be fictional or report an event.
iv.)Music: Sing two songs or play two pieces on a musical instrument for your Pack.
13. Handcraft
i.) Make something using a craft method that is new to you.
ii.) Show the tools you used and explain how to care for them.
14. Your Community
i.) Home:
  1. Demonstrate you know how to do cleaning around the home such as vacuuming, sweeping, washing up and cleaning the bathroom.
  2. Do some minor repairs to clothes and around the house.
ii.) Local Community. Show you know where the main features are in your local area such as:
  1. Find out how your town or suburb name originated.
  2. Where is the nearest Police Station? Ambulance Station? Hospital?
iii.) Local Organisations: Name three essential service organisations that provide for your community and explain what they do.
