mIRC :: mIRC SOUNDS

[mirc]

Hear and Play sounds
We need to configure mIRC to be able to play the sounds so that you can hear them. open [Options] in mIRC .. using the hammer icon in the tool bar (see Fig 1).

Figure 1. The mIRC toolbar

Ok, now that we are in the options, open up sound. Depending on your version you will see different things in this window. I am using v6.03 for my screen shots.

Tick the "Enable sounds" box (Fig 2).

Figure 2. Turning sounds ON

Requests
Now we manage requests, place a check in all boxes (Fig 3);

  • Accept sound request: if this isn't checked you will not hear sounds.
  • Ignore if sound is playing: if this isn't checked the next sound played will cut the one you have off as it starts.
  • Warn if sound doesn't exist: if this isn't checked you won't be warned that you don't have the sound.
  • Listen for '!nick file' get requests: if this is checked you will send the nick typing !yournick the sound you just played.
  • Send '!nick file' in private message: if this isn't check you will inform them in the channel of the send.

Sound folder(s)
Fill in the directory of where your wavs are stored, normally c:\mirc\sounds\

Figure 3. Where do you keep your files?

Get and Request sounds
If you get the message "sound doesn't exist" you would type

	!nickname nameofwav.wav

Put the nickname of the person playing the sound in for !nickname and the name of the sound in for nameofwav.wav. Please not spelling of both the nickname and sound name plus the sound extention must be exact.

If the other person has their mIRC setup to autosend files you will automatically be sent this file. Now not everyone has it setup this way. So don't fret if it doesn't work everytime.You may have to ask some people to get the sound. Always start asking in the channel first. Some people hate msg's and dcc chats out of the blue (might even just ignore you from that point on). If you don't get the file or the person doesn't respond wait a couple of minutes to try again. They may be sending as many files as they can, or just may be busy. Constant repeating is a sure fire way to get ignored or even kicked and banned from the channel.

Using sounds
Now that we have the sounds set up we need to get some and use them. You can collect files from other chatters, or download some from the web.
The SOUND command looks like this;

	/sound sound.wav text-here

So ....
	/sound trumpet.wav time to wake up!

would play (only if you had it) the trumpet.wav and say 'time to wake up!' after it.
