Geocaching Kit
The distilled wisdom of Geocaching and Urban Exploration forums, lists and sites.
YOU NEED::
The bare essentials will include;
- A GPS unit
- Access to the Geocaching.com web site
- A pen and/or pencil
- Swaps (if you wish to make exchanges)
- A First Aid Kit
- A comfortable daypack to carry stuff
- common sense :)
CLOTHING::
On the one hand you may want to be a special forces commando out
there in full camo and covered with gear. Unfortunately if you walk around suburbia
wearing that stuff you're sure to get picked up by the police
and then you have to explain yourself all while lying on the ground with dogs barking at you.
Go for comfort, and try to use stealth mode - you will have more luck finding an inner
city cache if you ar dressed in urban cool (even a suit?); you may stand out a bit
wearing your tuxedo to a river bank :)
REPAIRS::
Cache repair/replacement kit;
- duct tape
- spare geocaching.com cache sheets
- zip-loc bags
- spare pens/pencils
- spare log-books
YOU MAY NEED::
These items can make you life a bit easier;
- Spare batteries (AA compatible with GPS, torch, camera, UHF radios, etc)
- Maps, topo maps, more maps [WARNING: Map collection is addictive!]
10 minutes of planning can save you hours of walking coz you didn't notice that river,
ravine or freeway between you and the cache...
- A Compass
- A whistle
- Food (chocolate is good) and Drink
- A pocket knife, leatherman or similar
- A mirror - for searching for those craftily hidden waypoints
- To signup with the Geocaching Australia Forum
- Geocaching Swiss Army Knife GSAK
- garbage bags - good as a ruse and also for the environment
OPTIONAL::
Now you are hooked, you may wish to add a few more toys;
- A camera (a cheap digital is pretty handy)
- UHF Radio - becoming increasingly common as a caching tool.
- A torch or two :
- a high powered spotlight,
- a standard flashlight
- a mini-Maglite.
- a headlamp
- a keyring light
- Computer based GPS mapping software [eg. OziExplorer]
- A ball of string
- Wet Weather gear
- Microcassette notetaker (handy for several caches!)
- Compact 10x25 binoculars
- a bright orange worker's vest
- A 4 m. length of rope (well, you always needed it in
D&D)
- A spoon ! --- see Get Smart
- A towel; of course you could just carry the location of your towel in your GPS because you
only need to know where it is ...
"There's a frood who
really knows where his towel is.".
Looking at 5 STARS ?!
At 5 stars things are getting difficult, you will need to have a
careful read through the cache description to find out what you
are getting yourself into. You may need access to, and the training
tou use;
- Rockclimbing gear
- Canyoning gear
- SCUBA gear
- A 4WD
- Kayak ....
