What is Geocaching?
Simply put, geocaching is treasure hunting for the 21st century. Armed with a GPS receiver, a set of coordinates that tell you the location of a cache, and a healthy sense of adventure, players go out and look for caches of goodies...
(from Buxley's Geocaching Waypoint)

"On May 3, 2000, Dave Ulmer proposed a way to celebrate the demise of SA. He hid a bucket of trinkets in the woods outside Portland, Oregon and announced its location in a posting made to the USENET newsgroup sci.geo.satellite-nav. This announcement is remarkable for laying out the essence of the hobby that is still in place today.

Tools of the Trade?

"What do you need to go Geocaching?" I hear you ask. This is a good question. You will need a connection the internet (probably how you are reading this now). You will need a GPS, these are not all that expensive and can be picked up for under $200. You will need a mode of transportation ... walk, ride, drive, fly; it's your call. You will need a sense of adventure and some basic navigation skills.
You will need more information...
